The Bronte Seat
A circular walk will take you from the Bronte parsonage in Haworth to the location of Top Withens where it is said Emily Bronte based her idea for the location of her famous book "Wuthering Heights".On the return of the walk one reaches the Bronte Bridge which had to be replaced after heavy storms and the Bronte Falls. It is here that one can find the Bronte Seat,a large chair shaped stone. This was a favourite place the sisters Ann,Emily and Charlotte and was often visited on their walks across the wildness of the Yorkshire moors..

Beautiful picture and place, I wish I could visit it !

Thanks for the comment. It looks nice in the right weather but the surrounding moors are bleak and barren except for heather and gorse.

Thank for your reply. Anyway, I think it is a kind of "mythic" place to visit for a Brontë lover !

It is a place to visit. The Brontes lived in the parsonage in the town of Haworth. Much of it is still the same, even the pub is still there where Branwell Bronte would spend much of his time. The parsonage is worth a visit to get the feel of what their lives were like, even the couch were Emily died is there. The moors around are wild and barron and life would have been very hard for them.
I never understood how having been brought up in rather religious circumstances Emily got the idea to write something like Wuthering Heights. Read it several times..love Jane Austen as well and for a guy to say that is rather weird probably.

Yes, I see what you mean, Emily's novel is quite strange for us who perhaps had a less religiuous way of life, so for people from the victorian era..! Quite strange. But, the three girls had religious problems, I mean, Charlotte was quite lost sometimes too (religious crisis). Well, it is not true for Anne in fact, I think she was the most conformist in religion.
About Jane Austen, I like her too, but you're right, in general people think it is a author for girls. I love Jane Austen even if some people say that it is quite girlish (happy endings, everybody is relatively nice etc)! Anyway, we love the Brontë and Jane Austen for dfifferent reasons. Charlotte Brontë didn't like Austen so much because she thought her novels lacked passion. She also said that all in Jane Austen novels had to be proper, it is true but sometimes Austen is very scornful, even with good characters.
By the way, sorry for reply back late !

Hi Charlotte,
I have read several of Jane Austens. I suppose they are girly but they are interesting and at times there is a subtle humour to them.
I rather like the films produced from them,Sense and Sensibility was good as were a few others but I dont like the way modern writers seem to be unable to script a new version without the continual need for sexual scenes. No I am not a prude..very far from it but I get very annoyed at scenes being placed in a production when there is no mention of it in the original book. Anything to get ratings I suppose.
But then I think the criteria for any film these days is masses of sex scenes and explosions and very little story line..maybe I am getting too old and seen it all before.
There was recently a new production of Emma on BBC...absolutley pathetic, I really feel that the modern actors and actresses have no idea of how to portray the roles of 18th century life.

Hi Eddie !

I see what you mean, everything as to be "sensationnal". I like Sense and sensibility too : the actors are good, I mean with them it would be quite strange to have a bad film. I didn't see the new Emma, I saw the one with Gwyneth paltrow but I have to say I don't really like Emma's character. What are your favorite films on Jane austen novels and the ones you don't like ?
:iconwandereringsoul:
I generally prefer the books to the films. I can never understand why there is a need to use American actresses as leading ladies in films of English books. Why on earth they used that revolting Renée Zellweger in the film about Beatrix Potter is betyond me.
I dont care very much for any of the modern versions of great books in films, the stroy line is always so distorted, usually for the benefit of some bedroom scene, which wasnt in the book.
I have an old film of Wuthering Heights in black and white. Actually I suppose it is only about 20 years old but it really portrays Catherine as I imagined her to be. Feisty and defiant but lost in love.
I liked Northanger Abbey. I also liked a film made some years back of "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" by Anne Bronte.I thought it was a very good book as well.
So it seems I dont care too much for any of the modern film versions of classic books....maybe the world has changed to much for my liking.
Eddie
