Standing on the north east end of Loch Awe Kilchurn Castle is a 15th century castle now in ruin.
The castle was a Campbell stronghold but it is considered to have been built on an earlier site site of McGregor of Glenstrae.
It became a government stronghold during the Jacobean times but was previously held by the Campbell's for four hundred years.
With the pacification of the Highland Clans and the dispersal of the McGregor's the Castle outlived its usefulness. Lord Glenorchy became the Duke of Breadalbane as the Campbell's power and wealth grew and the family moved to Taymouth Castle in Perthshire.
The Castle was abandoned completely at the end of the 18th Century and then had the misfortune to be burnt out after a "lightning strike"
Although now a ruin it setting is almost a fairy tale vision of Scottish castles

Thank you so much for this, I have been studying my ancestry and found direct lineage to Clan Campbell through two of my grandparents, I am so lucky to be afforded the opportunity to view such lovely depiction of my ancestral grounds!

This is a very beautiful photograph! In it's reflection, the castle appeared to be intact at first glance... :)

Hi Oriole,
Never give up. Look at peoples photos and work out what they did...lighting, compostition etc and in many cases ask yourself were they lucky to get all the elements right or have they worked on the image in something like Photoshop.
The shot of Kilchern castle was my third visit there and this was the only day I got what I wanted.
